First Lady Jill Biden met with the families of U.S. Olympic athletes on Thursday, emphasizing a vision of a “united” America, shortly after President Biden announced he would be stepping back from his re-election campaign.

Biden, who is set to lead the American delegation at the upcoming Summer Games, made her first public comments since President Biden’s announcement in a memo that he would suspend his re-election efforts and endorse Vice President Harris instead.

“They represent who we are as Americans – committed, hopeful, and resilient. Our strength is reflected not only in our achievements but also in our collective spirit. With all our unique differences and shared similarities, we are always one team. This unity is what I cherish about our country; together, we can achieve anything.”

“President Biden has led our nation with hope always guiding his actions… As he often states, there is nothing America cannot accomplish when we stand united, a sentiment especially relevant now at the Olympics.”

The First Lady’s comments were delivered against the backdrop of a highly charged political climate in Washington.

Biden, 81, shared his first public remarks on Wednesday following his announcement.

“In recent weeks, it has become evident to me that uniting my party is essential at this crucial juncture. I believed that my presidency’s record, my international leadership, and my vision for America’s future warranted a second term. However, we must prioritize safeguarding our democracy above all else,” Biden declared.

“This also involves setting aside personal ambition. Thus, I believe the most effective way forward is to hand the reins to a new generation. This is the best path to unite our nation. There is a time for extensive experience in public service and a time for emerging voices. This is that moment.”

Biden outlined his objectives for the remainder of his presidency, which include Supreme Court reform along with other initiatives.
