- Paul Scholes expressed enthusiasm for the direction Manchester United is heading
- Under Erik ten Hag, the team has finalized the signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro
- However, Scholes emphasized the importance of player fitness to prevent another injury crisis
Paul Scholes has stated that he is ‘thrilled’ with Manchester United’s new signings ahead of the upcoming season and indicated that the squad could benefit from further additions prior to the transfer window closing.
Erik ten Hag’s team has already brought in 23-year-old Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for £36.5M and 18-year-old Leny Yoro from Lille for £52M. Scholes believes that these new players, coupled with more seasoned talents, can elevate the team’s prospects.
‘I’m genuinely excited for the new season. It’s a bit uncertain because both signings are young players—particularly the one from France (Yoro)—but they have ample time to integrate before the season kicks off,’ Scholes commented.
‘The crucial factor for United is keeping last season’s players healthy. It was challenging to maintain a complete squad, and the performances last season reflected that struggle. If these two signings prove effective and we add some more experience alongside them, then I’m hopeful for a successful season,’ he added.
United departed for the USA this week as part of their pre-season arrangements, but Zirkzee along with other players received additional time off due to their participation in Euro 2024 and Copa America, with most expected to be back by early August.

Scholes stressed the need for additional signings to prevent another injury crisis similar to last season.
Kobbie Mainoo was another player not selected for Ten Hag’s 29-man tour squad after his standout performance for England at Euro 2024. Scholes pointed out the significant role he will likely play in the new season.
‘I’ve mentioned this before about Mainoo. I’ve rarely seen a young player come onto the scene so composed and proficient at everything he does,’ Scholes remarked while attending the LIV Golf Pro-Am alongside figures like Ben Foster and Lawrence Dallaglio.
‘He’s only had 30 or 40 appearances in his first-team career, yet to start for England at the Euros and excel is remarkable. This bodes well for the future, as he’s a fantastic talent we must nurture,’ he concluded.
