Pep Guardiola expresses the possibility of continuing his tenure at Manchester City beyond this season.
The manager’s contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the upcoming campaign.
Following City’s remarkable achievement of securing their fourth consecutive Premier League title, Guardiola hinted at uncertainty regarding his future, stating he feels “closer to leaving than staying”.
The Spaniard has led City for eight seasons, clinching the league title six times as part of a total of 17 trophies won.
Addressing reporters in New York ahead of City’s pre-season match against AC Milan at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, Guardiola mentioned that no decisions have been made yet.
“I never said I was leaving,” he remarked.
“Nine years at the same club is quite a long time. I don’t dismiss the possibility of extending my contract. It’s essential to ensure that it’s the right choice for both the club and the players.
“When I make my decision, I will speak with my CEO and sporting director. For now, I want to start the season and assess how everything unfolds and how connected we are. Afterwards, we will see.”
Guardiola hopes to lead the team during the expanded 32-team Club World Cup set to take place in the United States next summer, though he remains uncertain about the tournament itself, which has become a subject of contention between FIFA and prominent players’ unions.
City could potentially play 75 matches this season, commencing with the Community Shield against Manchester United at Wembley on 10 August, and possibly culminating in the Club World Cup final in the U.S. on 13 July.
Striker Erling Haaland commented on the challenges of maintaining form with such a heavy schedule.
“It’s tough to stay sharp when you’re playing 70 games in a year,” Haaland stated.
“You could see the fatigue during the Euros. Some will need to take ample rest. It’s crucial to collaborate with those around you to perform at your best.”
However, Guardiola appeared to show little sympathy towards the Norwegian’s concerns.
Guardiola permitted City players participating in the Copa America and Euro 2024 latter stages to choose their pre-season training return dates, aiming to avoid them arriving back worn out.
Norway, where Haaland represents, did not qualify for the Euros.
“He needs to rest more,” Guardiola advised regarding Haaland. “If he feels tired, he should go to bed early. Being tired is just an excuse.”
