An emotional Calum Scott expressed that his walk down the final hole at Royal Troon, where he clinched the Open Championship’s esteemed Silver Medal, was among the “most incredible moments” of his life.
Scott, hailing from Nairn in the Highlands, wrapped up the tournament with an eight-over score, securing the accolade given to the top amateur by three strokes over the USA’s Tommy Morrison.
“As an amateur golfer, this is one of the highest honors,” Scott remarked. “It’s truly unbelievable, and I couldn’t be happier.”
“Sure, I didn’t have my best game today, but it was sufficient to claim the win.”
Amid windy conditions, scoring proved to be challenging for all competitors. Scott noted that the dream of winning the Silver Medal and emulating names like Matt Fitzpatrick, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Rose kept his spirits high during a tough back nine.
“I hit three consecutive bogeys, so my mental state wasn’t the best,” he mentioned.
“I was wondering about my standing among amateurs. When I learned I still had a comfortable lead, it lifted my spirits considerably.”
“Walking down the 18th was truly one of the highlights of my life. Competing in the Walker Cup was incredible too, but this moment was exceptionally special. I felt a wave of emotion as I approached the final hole, yet I still had putts to make.”
Scottish golf has had a triumphant few weeks; Ewen Ferguson emerged victorious at the BMW International Open in Munich, followed by Bob MacIntyre’s win at last week’s Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club. Scott, who aims to turn professional next year, is determined to follow in their winning paths on the tour in the future.
“What Bob and Ewen have achieved is phenomenal,” he concluded. “They’re showcasing incredible golf on the grandest stage, and that’s exactly what I strive to accomplish.”
