As Barbora Krejcikova held the Venus Rosewater Dish, one phrase echoed from her lips.
“I can’t find the words, it’s just amazing,” the Czech player exclaimed, eliciting cheers from those gathered.
When asked about the significance of having another Wimbledon champion from the Czech Republic, she replied: “I think it’s hard to believe that I made it to the final, and even harder to believe that I won Wimbledon.
“I still can’t wrap my head around it.”
Krejcikova entered SW19 having secured only three victories in five months, struggling with a season filled with injuries and illnesses.
Now, she exits as the Wimbledon champion, having triumphed through seven consecutive matches, culminating in an exhilarating 6-2 2-6 6-4 victory against seventh seed Jasmine Paolini.
Her journey began with a challenging three-set win over Veronika Kudermetova, which included a pair of tie-breaks and a decisive 7-5 finish.
Out of nowhere, Krejcikova discovered the form that turned her dream into reality.
“Just two weeks ago, I faced a very tough match, and I wasn’t in great shape due to injuries and illness,” she reflected.
“I didn’t start the season well at all. It’s hard to believe that I’m here now as a Wimbledon champion.
“I truly have no idea [how it all happened].”
