Huske finished with a time of 55.59 seconds, closely followed by Walsh at 55.63 seconds. Zhang Yufei of China took home the bronze medal.
Both Huske and Walsh were favorites heading into the competition, yet the USA had not secured a medal in this event since Dana Vollmer won bronze in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Vollmer was the last American to claim gold in this event, achieving victory in 2012 in London.
Huske recorded the third-fastest heat time at 56.72 seconds and finished second in the semifinals at a time of 56 seconds flat.

Walsh set a new Olympic record in the semifinals with a time of 55.38 seconds and also holds the world record for the event, established during the U.S. Olympic trials in June.
With Huske winning gold, the United States maintained its lead with a total of nine medals. However, there were only two gold medals claimed by the U.S. at that point in the competition.
