BUTLER, Penn. – The families of the two bystanders injured in the assassination attempt on former President Trump have shared their thoughts after the incident left their relatives hospitalized.
The family of James “Jim” Copenhaver expressed gratitude for the “tremendous support” they have received as he recuperates from his “life-changing injuries” at Allegheny General Hospital.
“Jim particularly wants to extend his thanks to the first responders, medics, and hospital personnel who have been instrumental in his initial and ongoing care,” the family stated in a communiqué from Allegheny Health Network. “He also wishes to send his prayers to the other victims, their families, and President Trump.”
“He hopes for a safe and swift recovery for everyone affected,” they added.
According to Allegheny Health Network, Copenhaver “was released from Allegheny General Hospital late Friday.”

74-year-old Copenhaver and 57-year-old David “Jake” Dutch were critically injured when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13.
The family of Dutch also shared an update regarding his recovery, announcing that he was upgraded to “serious but stable condition” on Wednesday.

The family expressed gratitude to the surgical staff at the Western Pennsylvania hospital for “saving” David’s life following the tragic shooting at the Butler County Fair Grounds.

“David and our whole family are particularly thankful to all the first responders and medical staff who preserved his life, including the Life Flight and trauma surgical teams at AGH,” they stated in a press release from Allegheny Health Network. “As we concentrate on David’s recovery, we continue to extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the other victims of this unfortunate incident and their families.”
Dutch was released from the hospital on Wednesday, July 24.

Corey Comperatore, 50, tragically lost his life in the shooting while former President Trump was injured when a bullet grazed his ear.
Comperatore was honored at his funeral as a devoted father and committed firefighter. He sacrificed his life while shielding his family from the hail of gunfire that erupted at the rally.

Trump paid tribute to the fallen firefighter at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, displaying Comperatore’s firefighter jacket and helmet on stage.
“He lost his life selflessly acting as a human shield to protect them from flying bullets… what a fine man he was,” Trump remarked during his RNC speech. “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for others.”
