Carson Foster, a swimmer for Team USA, came within a fingertip of securing silver in the 400-meter individual medley final at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday.
As Foster powered through the final 50 meters of freestyle, the entire field was in a fierce battle for silver, while French star Leon Marchand, leading the pack, aimed for a new world record. Marchand ultimately claimed the first gold medal of his career.
In a nail-biting finish, Foster and Japan’s Matsushita Tomoyuki were neck-and-neck for the silver and bronze, and it appeared that whoever had the longer reach would take the prize.

As both swimmers reached for the wall, Tomoyuki managed to touch first with a time of 4:08.62.
Foster followed closely behind with a time of 4:08.66, marking a mere four hundredths of a second between silver and bronze.

Nevertheless, Foster contributed to the USA’s medal tally, which was tied with Australia at the end of the first day of competition on Saturday.
At 22 years old, Foster is certainly not complaining about clinching his inaugural Olympic medal, and he aims to secure more as he is set to compete in the men’s 200-meter individual medley.

Reviewing the rest of the final results, Great Britain’s Max Litchfield finished fourth with a time of 4:08.85, while Italy’s Alberto Razzetti claimed fifth place at 4:09.38.
For Marchand, the moment was euphoric once he exited the pool, greeted by a loud crowd celebrating his gold-medal triumph.
Although Marchand’s time of 4:02.95 did not surpass his world record of 4:02.50 set in 2023, it did establish a new Olympic record.

Phelps set a record time of 4:03.84 in this event during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which stood as both a world and Olympic record at that time.
