Before joining the MLB, Creek was a remarkable pitcher in West Virginia and later at Georgia Tech, where he became the winningest left-handed pitcher in the school’s history. He was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh round of the 1991 MLB Draft.

Creek made his major league debut with the Cardinals in 1995, pitching in six games that season. Before the start of the 1996 season, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants, a move that helped the Cardinals acquire Royce Clayton.
