Reyes Moronta, a former pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic, according to a statement released by one of his former teams on Monday. He was just 31 years old.

The Aguilas Cibaenas, a baseball team in the Dominican Republic, issued a statement regarding Moronta’s passing.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of pitcher Reyes Moronta, who passed away yesterday,” the team expressed.

“The Aguilas organization, along with the baseball operations team and players, share in the grief with his family, and we offer our prayers for his eternal rest.”

Moronta was involved in a motorcycle accident in the Villa Gonzalez area. He had recently been released from Bravos de Leon in the Mexican League just last week.

Moronta began his career with the San Francisco Giants, making his debut in 2017 and playing most extensively during the next two seasons. He posted a 2.49 ERA across 69 appearances in 2018 and a 2.86 ERA in 56 games in 2019.

He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022 but was later claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks that season. Moronta joined the Angels in May 2023 but was released following the season.

Over six years in Major League Baseball, he recorded a 3.05 ERA in 177 appearances.

“The San Francisco Giants are heartbroken to learn of the passing of former reliever Reyes Moronta, who died yesterday in the Dominican Republic,” the team stated.
