The New England Patriots have revealed that defensive tackle Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots over the weekend and is presently receiving care at Mass General Brigham Hospital.

This diagnosis leaves Barmore, a second-round selection from the 2021 NFL Draft, sidelined indefinitely.

“Our primary concern at this juncture is Christian’s health and well-being,” a statement from the Patriots indicates. “Fortunately, Mass General Brigham Hospital offers some of the finest healthcare available.”

“While no timeline for his return currently exists, we know Christian is receiving exceptional care, and we anticipate his full recovery.”

This medical issue could have had more serious implications, as Barmore’s agent, Nicole Lynn, expressed gratitude on X for head Patriots trainer Jim Whalen.

“I would be remiss if I did not express my thanks to the Patriots’ trainer, Jim Whalen, for his tremendous diligence and care over the past few days,” Lynn stated on X. “Today could have turned out significantly differently without Jim’s persistence and expertise.”

NFL Network reported that Barmore had a bruise on the back of his calf, which he initially thought was minor, but Whalen insisted he get it checked to ensure there were no underlying issues.

“Had this gone untreated, it could have been detrimental for Christian Barmore,” Ian Rapoport remarked on Sunday.

Barmore, who celebrated his 25th birthday on July 28, experienced a breakout third season in 2023, achieving a career-high of 8.5 sacks and 64 combined tackles across 17 games (six starts).

This performance led the Patriots to secure him with a four-year extension valued at up to $92 million, including $41.8 million guaranteed upon signing, prior to the final year of his rookie contract.

Barmore was anticipated to be a starting player this season, but as stated by the Patriots, their primary concern right now is not football.

The team has faced a similar situation in the past where a player dealt with blood clots. Center David Andrews, a longstanding veteran with the team, was diagnosed in 2019 with clots in his lungs. Andrews successfully returned to play in 2020 and continues to be a part of the team as he approaches his 10th season.
