Mikel Arteta is optimistic that Riccardo Calafiori’s “unique talents” will assist Arsenal in taking the final leap toward winning significant trophies, following the confirmation of the Italy defender’s transfer from Bologna.
After signing a five-year contract, Calafiori met his new teammates in Philadelphia ahead of Arsenal’s friendly clash with Liverpool. The adaptable 22-year-old is reported to have cost an initial £33.6m, with the total fee anticipated to rise to £42m with bonuses, and he is likely to be utilized at left-back, even though he excelled in a more central role during Euro 2024.
Arteta is confident that Calafiori’s addition, whom he has been monitoring for several months due to the former Roma player’s impressive performances that led Bologna to a fourth-place finish in Serie A, will enhance a defense that had the fewest goals conceded in the Premier League last season.
“Riccardo is a strong personality and character, with unique skills that will bolster us as we aim for major trophies,” stated the Arsenal manager. “He has already displayed significant development in recent seasons with his performances for both Bologna and Italy, and his progress over the past year has been truly remarkable.
“We’re eager to work with Riccardo, assimilate him into the squad, and support him in the years ahead.”
Last season, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jakub Kiwior, and Takehiro Tomiyasu competed for the left-back position, with Tomiyasu expected to miss the start of the season due to injury. Jurriën Timber, who spent most of last season sidelined with injury, is another option, but Calafiori’s ball skills and game awareness should make him a valuable addition. It’s understood that multiple clubs made bids in recent weeks, but Calafiori was determined to move to north London.
“We identified Riccardo as part of our strategy to recruit players who align with our profile and will strengthen our squad to compete at the highest level,” said Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu. “Though he is just 22, he brings quality and experience.”
Calafiori expressed: “I had extensive discussions with the coach and Edu, and they convinced me, though I was already convinced myself. I believe this is the best project for my growth in the coming years, and I am hopeful that we will also secure trophies.”
