Carlos Sainz stated that an “exceptionally complex” Formula One driver market led to a delay in his decision to sign a two-year contract with Williams starting next season. The Spaniard will depart Ferrari at the conclusion of 2024 after the announcement of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as his successor earlier this year.
Sainz has achieved three F1 race victories in his career, the most recent being at the Australian Grand Prix in March. For the first time in F1 history, all teams maintained their driver lineups from the previous year for the 2024 season, but significant changes are expected ahead of 2025.
Having previously raced for Toro Rosso, Renault, and McLaren, Sainz had been associated with various teams for the 2025 season, including Alpine, Sauber, and Mercedes. However, his next move was finalized on Monday with the confirmation of his two-year contract with Williams.
“I am thrilled to share that I will be joining Williams Racing from 2025 onwards,” the 29-year-old affirmed. “It is well-known that this year’s driver market has been particularly intricate for several reasons, which caused a delay in my decision.
“Yet, I am completely confident that Williams is the ideal place for me to continue my F1 journey, and I feel immensely proud to join such a historic and successful team, where many of my childhood heroes left their mark on the sport.
“My ultimate aim of helping bring Williams back to the front of the grid is a challenge I embrace with enthusiasm and optimism. I firmly believe this team possesses all the right elements to create history once more, and starting from January 1, I will dedicate myself completely to advancing Williams alongside every team member.”
Sainz will take over from Logan Sargeant at Williams, partnering with Alex Albon. Williams has faced challenges in recent seasons, achieving their last podium finish in 2021, with their most recent victory being Pastor Maldonado’s surprising win at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.
“Carlos joining Williams is a strong declaration of intent from both sides,” stated Williams team principal, James Vowles. “Carlos has proven time and again that he is among the most talented drivers on the grid, with a race-winning background, which highlights our positive direction.
“Carlos offers not just experience and performance, but also a determined drive to extract every millisecond from the team and car; the fit is ideal. With Alex and Carlos, we will have one of the most formidable driver lineups on the grid, bringing significant experience as we navigate the new regulations in 2026.”
