Enzo Fernandez has expressed remorse to several French teammates within the Chelsea squad following allegations of “uninhibited racism” made by colleague Wesley Fofana.
The 23-year-old Argentina star arrived in Atlanta, USA, and addressed the video he shared on social media after Argentina’s victory over Colombia in the Copa America final on July 14.
The video showcased a song performed by some members of the Argentina team regarding France’s black players, which the French Football Federation labeled as containing an alleged “racist and discriminatory” chant.
A formal complaint was lodged with FIFA, and Chelsea initiated an internal disciplinary investigation which has since concluded.
Chelsea’s first-team comprises seven players from France who identify as black or mixed race. Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Lesley Ugochukwu, Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto, and Fofana were all on the roster for Chelsea’s US tour.
Fofana, who has appeared once for France, shared an image of the video on Instagram, labeling it as “uninhibited racism.”
According to BBC Sport, several players found the initial discussions helpful, and new manager Enzo Maresca is anticipated to confirm Fernandez’s return soon.
Fernandez has also volunteered to contribute to an anti-discrimination charity, with Chelsea agreeing to match the donation.
Maresca downplayed the matter in his inaugural press conference as manager last week, expressing confidence that there would be “no problems at all” upon Fernandez’s return.
Noni Madueke supported those sentiments, stating that the situation would “be fine.” However, captain Reece James acknowledged the issue as a “problem” and expressed his willingness to serve as a mediator.
An ongoing investigation by FIFA may result in involvement from the FA and a possible ban from domestic matches for Fernandez.
