Jack Grealish has described his exclusion from England’s Euro 2024 squad as the “most challenging experience I’ve faced in my career.”
The 28-year-old Manchester City forward expressed that he was “devastated” but aims to channel this experience into motivation for the future.
Grealish participated as a substitute during England’s 3-0 warm-up victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina at St James’ Park just a week before the tournament began, yet he was not selected for Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man team.
England ultimately advanced to the final, where they fell 2-1 to Spain.
“During my holiday, it was tough to avoid seeing updates about the tournament every time I checked my phone or turned on the TV,” remarked the former Aston Villa player, who has earned 36 caps for England.
“To be honest, this was the toughest situation I’ve encountered regarding my football career.
“I was truly heartbroken. Moving forward, I need to use this experience as motivation for the upcoming season.”
Grealish transferred to City from Villa in August 2021 for a British record fee of £100m.
“I genuinely believed I should have been part of the [England] squad,” Grealish stated during City’s preseason tour in the United States.
“I believe I bring a unique quality compared to other players in the England team.
“But it is what it is.
“As I mentioned, it was the toughest moment of my journey as a footballer. I’ve experienced many highs and lows in my career.”
