Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has expressed worries regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’ well-documented difficulties with retaining staff, stating to Fox News that “nobody lasts very long” under her leadership and that “how she treats those around her is a significant indicator of her future actions.”

During his appearance on “Life, Liberty & Levin” this week, McCarthy remarked, “Nobody stays for long. Even as VP, despite her not being particularly active, she struggled to maintain staff. This is a subject the media tends to overlook… The way she interacts with people around her is a true reflection of what she will do moving forward.”

He further commented, “It is well-known in California and in Washington D.C. that working for her is a challenging environment.”

McCarthy also recounted, “When she was elected to the Senate, I was the Majority Leader. I tried to arrange a meeting, but she never agreed to meet. Conversations with Democrats in the California delegation revealed their discontent because she declined to engage with them.”

The comments from the former California House Republican arise following a report from OpenTheBooks.com, identified as a “government watchdog organization,” which indicated that Harris has a staggering 91.5% turnover rate among staff within the Office of the Vice President.

According to the organization, as of March 31, 2024, only four out of the 47 staff members initially hired during Harris’ first year as vice president in 2021 remain with her without interruption.

In the year prior, 24 of her staffers resigned, as well noted. Currently, she reportedly has 50 staff employed.

Overall, Harris’s turnover rate of almost 92% is significantly greater than President Biden’s turnover rate of 77% and former President Trump’s rate of 72% during the first through fourth years of their respective administrations, according to OpenTheBooks.com.

Since 2021, 127 out of Biden’s initial 560 White House staffers continue to serve him, the report also revealed.

“This has been an ongoing issue,” one former aide of Harris was quoted as saying to The Hill in 2022. “You must have supportive people around you.”

“Politics rely heavily on relationships and how one interacts with their team,” mentioned another former staff member. “There is definitely need for improvement in that area.”

Years prior, the father of a former intern for then-California Attorney General Harris wrote an op-ed for The Union newspaper wherein he spoke of his son’s “eye-opening experience” while working for her that was “completely unexpected.’

“Senator Harris is known for using ‘F-bombs’ and other harsh language regularly while reprimanding staff. They fear her, and she employs this language during the day,” Terry McAteer wrote.

“As Attorney General, she instructed her staff to stand whenever she entered the office and to formally greet her with, ‘Good Morning General,’” he added, noting that “Gregory was also told not to speak to Harris or make eye contact, as that privilege was reserved for senior staff.”
