A 19-year-old illegal immigrant, Darwin Gomez-Izquiel, pleaded guilty on Monday for his involvement in the brutal assault on two NYPD officers in Times Square earlier this year.

As part of a deal from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, he will serve 364 days in jail.

Other individuals involved—Yohenry Brito, 24, and Ulises Bohorquez, 21—were also offered plea deals leading to a one-year sentence for pleading guilty to second-degree assault, according to the New York Post referencing the DA’s office.

Patrick Hendry, president of the New York Police Benevolent Association, expressed that longer sentences should have been mandated for the suspects, but he appreciated Gomez-Izquiel’s guilty plea to a felony.

“The crucial test will be what happens once his sentence concludes,” he added. “He should be deported immediately upon completion of his term, without ever stepping onto our streets again.”

Hendry pointed out that other defendants played more significant roles in the assault on the officers, and their cases remain unresolved.

This case originates from a January incident where an NYPD officer and lieutenant were directing several migrants to clear a street in Times Square. Surveillance footage captured the migrants attacking the officers, striking them while they were down.

Many suspects were charged with assault and released without bail. One individual, Yorman Reveron, 24, faced two pending cases for assault and robbery.

The assaults sparked significant criticism aimed at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the Biden administration regarding the ongoing influx and release of migrants into the U.S.
