A former strategist for Obama has praised a current Midwestern governor for his “dynamic campaign” to secure a position on the ticket for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
David Axelrod, who served as the chief strategist for former President Obama’s election campaigns, commended Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in a social media post as reports suggest that Walz is a contender on Harris’ shortlist for vice president.
“Regardless of the outcome, it’s clear that MN Gov. @Tim_Walz is conducting the most dynamic campaign for VP among the candidates,” Axelrod tweeted, sharing a favorable Politico article that highlighted Walz’s “Midwest perseverance.”
While the vice presidential speculation has mostly focused on four frontrunners—Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper—Walz remains in the expanded conversation alongside Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Recently, Walz drew media attention for labeling former President Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, as “simply peculiar” during a recent interview on MSNBC.

Trump’s team responded to the Democrats’ characterization of the campaign as “peculiar” on Sunday, with Trump spokesman Steven Cheung sharing video of Walz calling Trump and Vance “peculiar” while campaigning for Harris. Cheung accused the Democratic nominee and her supporters of engaging in misleading tactics, referencing the alleged assassination attempt at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.
