Simone Biles is quickly running out of monumental milestones to achieve.

The 27-year-old American gymnast propelled the US team to a gold medal victory in the women’s gymnastics final on Tuesday, securing the win with her floor routine. Italy secured the silver medal.

With this latest success, Biles reaches her eighth Olympic medal overall. This achievement positions her as the most decorated Olympic gymnast in US history, surpassing Shannon Miller, the star of the “Magnificent Seven,” for the highest number of Olympic medals in a career.

Shannon Miller last competed in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where she also helped the U.S. secure a team gold, along with an individual gold in balance beam, which were her only two Olympic victories.

Currently, Biles has amassed five Olympic gold medals. She previously established the record for the most golds by an American gymnast with four medals won at the Rio Olympics.

If Biles continues to perform at this level in Paris, she has the potential to challenge the all-time world record for the most career gold medals won by a female gymnast, currently held by Larisa Latynina of the former Soviet Union with a total of nine.

With her current count at five, Biles has the opportunity to match Latynina’s record in Paris, having qualified for four individual event finals: all-around, vault, balance beam, and floor exercise.

If Biles medals in all these events, regardless of color, she would also equal a fellow American’s total career medal count. Former track and field star Allyson Felix is the only non-swimmer American woman with more Olympic medals than Biles, totaling 11.

Biles is on the verge of history despite her challenging experience at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she had to withdraw from competition due to “the twisties.” She came home from Tokyo with a silver medal, thanks to the support of her teammates.

There was uncertainty about Biles’ return to competition in Paris after her withdrawal in Tokyo due to concerns regarding her age. At 27, she has now become the oldest female gymnast ever to win an Olympic gold medal—five years older than Aly Raisman, who previously held the record.

However, Biles made a triumphant return to the international stage last summer at the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, where she became the most decorated gymnast in history with her 37th medal earned at an international competition. With automatic qualification for Paris, she is poised to tackle some of the remaining historic achievements in what is likely her final Olympic stint.
