• Beth Potter secured a third-place finish in the women’s triathlon on Wednesday
  • There were concerns about whether the race could proceed

Team GB athlete Beth Potter delivered an impressive performance, clinching a bronze medal in the women’s triathlon early Wednesday morning in Paris.

Initially, there were concerns about the event happening due to water quality issues in the River Seine; however, it was approved for competition at dawn on Wednesday, starting at 8 am local time.

Potter emerged from the swimming segment among the leading group and held her ground during the cycling phase, with four athletes vying for three medals during the 10km run.

In the final stretch, she was in contention with two French competitors and a Swiss athlete, while pre-race favorite Cassandre Beaugrand surged ahead to secure a clear lead.

Nevertheless, Potter showcased her resilience, finishing third behind Switzerland’s Julie Derron, marking Team GB’s 13th medal of the Olympics.

After nearly two hours of race, Potter fell to the ground in exhaustion upon crossing the finish line.

The 32-year-old from Scotland previously participated in the 10,000m at the Rio Olympics eight years ago but has since shifted focus to triathlon.

This transition has been fruitful as she claimed a medal in the humid conditions of the French capital.

Potter triumphed in the World Triathlon Championship Series last year, but has struggled to find optimal form in recent months.

She delivered one of her standout performances at this crucial moment to secure a podium finish.

Other British competitors also shined, with Georgia Taylor-Brown, a silver medallist from Tokyo, finishing sixth, while rising star Kate Waugh placed 15th.

The day’s triathlon events are not yet complete, as the men’s race is scheduled for 10:45 am local time (9:45 am BST).

Britain’s Alex Yee is considered one of the favorites after winning a silver medal in Tokyo three years ago.
