A man from El Salvador, accused of fatally shooting a Virginia woman during a carjacking over the weekend, was living in the United States without legal status, according to immigration officials.

Jose Aguilar-Martinez, 21, faces charges related to the tragic incident that caused the death of 54-year-old Melody Waldecker, a grandmother, as reported by FOX 5 DC.

Deputies from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 11:30 a.m. and found Waldecker deceased at the scene. Investigators confirmed that she was hit by her own vehicle while the suspect attempted to escape. 

Aguilar-Martinez was located and apprehended approximately 45 minutes later. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital after exhibiting signs of an unrelated medical issue, as reported by the news outlet.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Aguilar-Martinez entered the U.S. as a “gotaway” at an undisclosed date and place.

ICE has requested a detainer for him to ensure he is handed over to immigration officials upon his release from local custody.

Some “sanctuary” cities and counties frequently disregard such requests, allowing undocumented immigrants charged with crimes to re-enter the community without consequence.
