FIRST ON FOX: Juan Williams, a contributor for Fox News, has announced his upcoming book titled “New Prize for These Eyes: The Rise of America’s Second Civil Rights Movement,” scheduled for release in January 2025.
Published by Simon & Schuster, Williams combines his role as a political analyst at Fox News with his accolades as an author, journalist, and columnist for The Hill.
This new book acts as a continuation of Williams’ acclaimed 1987 civil rights narrative “Eyes on the Prize,” which also inspired a widely viewed PBS special.

In a Wednesday interview with Fox News Digital, Williams, an established author, shared his thoughts on writing this new piece, stating, “We are experiencing a different phase in race relations in America right now. It’s a new movement that many fail to recognize, becoming lost in current political events and personal figures.”
By taking a broader perspective, “one can observe that something significant is unfolding here that includes all of us. Each of us plays a role in this historical narrative,” he expressed.

As we commemorate the year 2024, “we’re observing the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and in the coming year, we will mark 60 years since the passage of the ’65 Voting Rights Act,” he noted.
“While we acknowledge these historical milestones, it becomes more challenging to recognize that we are living within a new political and civil rights paradigm,” he continued.
“In today’s society, it is easy to get swept away by current controversies and the transient nature of prominent figures,” he remarked. “People often find it difficult to see their role in history — and yet, we are in a significant historical moment regarding race and culture in America.”

“By engaging with daily political coverage through Fox News, I have recognized that something monumental is occurring. A book could serve as a guide for people to acknowledge their role in American history,” he stated.
This is not merely a narrative concerning Black Americans or other minorities, he emphasized.

“I aspire for all Americans, everyone in this nation,” Williams expressed, “to be able to reflect after reading this book and say, ‘Oh my goodness. I am a significant historical figure,’ recognizing their role in shaping American history. And I emphasize that this isn’t solely about Black Americans; White Americans are equally pivotal in this movement.”
Williams reflected on the importance of remembering the George Floyd protests.
“These protests represented the largest gatherings in American history, with a predominant number of participants being White individuals — thus, many may assume this narrative pertains solely to Black, Latino, or Asian audiences. But it extends beyond that,” he articulated.
Without “White Americans advocating for change, progress would stagnate,” Williams stated.
Throughout his writing journey, Williams discovered that “one cannot grasp the current racial dynamics in America without acknowledging that White Americans still constitute the majority of the population — and that many among them are actively engaged in fostering this societal shift, alongside a significant cohort of Hispanic and Black individuals.”

Thus, without this “substantial collective that includes White Americans advocating for change, such progress would not materialize,” Williams proclaimed.
“A notable portion of Whites are genuinely committed to fostering a new narrative around race and ushering in a new racial paradigm in America.”
Williams is the author of a biography of former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, among numerous other publications.
“Today’s advocates are etching their place in history amidst a transforming political, economic, and cultural arena.”
He lamented that “one of the unfortunate aspects of this period in American society is that political divisions lead individuals to retreat into their own camps, shaping limited public perceptions of people.”

Ultimately, we should strive to “strip away these biases and think, ‘Hold on a moment. We are all privileged to be living in this nation. Look at the opportunities available in the United States. We also share common principles.’ The reason so many desire to come to this country is not just the promise of opportunity, but the vibrant life it offers.”

Williams emphasized the U.S. as not only a military superpower but also a cultural and economic force — a paradigm for race relations that many around the globe look up to.

His upcoming book intends to demonstrate how today’s civil rights movement “differs from the original movement’s concentration on courtroom victories and Congressional legislative success. The activists of today are carving history in an entirely new political, economic, and cultural context, utilizing modern media and a more educated populace to do so.”
