GOP candidate Jeff Zink, who is pro-Trump, emerged victorious in the primary held on Tuesday for Arizona’s predominantly Democratic 3rd Congressional District.
Zink prevailed over Jesús David Mendoza, a 29-year-old software engineer and political newcomer who positioned himself as a more moderate Republican candidate.

Zink, who tried to win the seat in 2022 unsuccessfully, gained attention for being among the large crowd that participated in former President Trump’s “Stop The Steal” rally on January 6, 2021, which led to the riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Although he secured the primary win, he faces significant challenges in winning a seat in Arizona’s most Democratic congressional district.
The district has a majority Latino and Hispanic population and includes substantial areas of Phoenix.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report lists it as D+24, identifying it as Arizona’s most liberal congressional district.
This district is being vacated by Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., at the end of the year as he runs for the Senate against Republican candidate Kari Lake in November.

Gallego has represented this district since early 2023, after previously holding Arizona’s 7th Congressional District from 2015 onward.
The progressive military veteran is anticipated to officially become the Democratic candidate to replace Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., who has decided not to seek re-election.
