Tributes are flowing for former Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare, who has sadly passed away at the age of 60.
Shakespeare, diagnosed with cancer last year, had an extensive coaching career, with notable recognition as Claudio Ranieri’s assistant during Leicester’s extraordinary Premier League title win in the 2015-2016 season.
Following Ranieri’s dismissal the next season, Shakespeare took over as manager but remained in the position for under a season. He also served as Sam Allardyce’s assistant during Allardyce’s brief stint as England manager, in addition to coaching roles at Hull, Watford, Aston Villa, Norwich, and Everton.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of Craig Shakespeare, ‘Shakey’,” his family stated in a release from the League Managers’ Association (LMA).
“Craig peacefully passed away this morning at home, surrounded by his family. While we take immense pride in his footballing accomplishments as both a player and a coach, to us, he will always be a cherished husband, father, son, brother, and uncle.”
“This loss is devastating for all of us, and we kindly request privacy during this incredibly challenging time as we come to terms with and mourn the loss of a truly remarkable person,” the family’s statement continued.
“We sincerely appreciate the many prayers and well-wishes sent our way over these past few difficult months. Although we couldn’t respond, these gestures meant a lot to Craig and the family.”
Martin O’Neill, chairman of the LMA, honored Shakespeare’s legacy. “Craig’s influence on those he worked with was frequently acknowledged by players, coaches, and managers,” he remarked.
“His depth of football knowledge and coaching skill were exceptional, but it was his warm personality that made individuals feel valued and assured that Craig genuinely cared about their growth and success,” O’Neill added.
“The role he played in his teams’ achievements should be celebrated, particularly at Leicester City, where he is rightfully regarded as a club legend who was essential to that incredible Premier League-winning season and many other memorable moments during his three stints with the club.”
“My thoughts and prayers are with Craig’s family and loved ones during this extremely sad time.”
