Michael McGovern, the former goalkeeper for Northern Ireland and Norwich City, has declared his retirement from professional football.
The 40-year-old player was let go by Hearts in May following the conclusion of his one-year deal with the Scottish Premiership team and is now taking on the role of head of goalkeeping at Queen’s Park.
McGovern earned 32 caps for the national team, debuting in 2010, and represented his country at the Euro 2016 tournament.
He began his professional journey at Celtic in 2001 and played for clubs such as Ross County, Falkirk, Hamilton Academicals, and spent seven years with Norwich.
“New beginnings!! After 23 seasons in professional football, I have made the decision to retire from the game,” McGovern shared on X.
“I am sincerely thankful to all the coaches, teammates, and supporters who have stood by me throughout my career.
“A heartfelt thank you to my family for all the sacrifices they have made to allow me to pursue my dreams. I eagerly anticipate my next chapter as Head of Goalkeeping at Queen’s Park Football Club.”
