Vice President Kamala Harris gathered an impressive $310 million in fundraising for July, as announced by her campaign on Friday morning, claiming it as “the largest haul of the 2024 cycle.”

This fundraising total for the Democratic Party’s likely presidential nominee was more than twice the $138.7 million that Donald Trump’s campaign revealed on Thursday was raised by the former president last month.

Harris experienced a fundraising boost in the 12 days following President Biden’s game-changing announcement to suspend his re-election campaign and endorse her as his successor at the forefront of the Democratic Party.

The beleaguered president’s swift endorsement of Harris triggered a flood of support from Democratic governors, senators, House representatives, and other influential party figures. Within 36 hours, Harris declared that she had secured her party’s nomination by obtaining the endorsement of the majority of the nearly 4,000 delegates for this month’s Democratic National Convention.

The Harris campaign emphasized that over $200 million was raised in the first week following Biden’s departure from the race, dubbing it the “single greatest week in fundraising history” and claiming that July marked the “most successful grassroots fundraising month in presidential campaign history.”

Additionally, the Harris campaign noted that two-thirds of the total amount raised came from first-time donors and revealed a substantial $377 million in funds available as of the end of July.

The $310 million raised this July, originally part of the Biden campaign but swiftly transitioned to Harris’s effort, marks a sharp increase from the $127 million garnered by the Biden-Harris ticket in June. Nearly $40 million of the June total was secured after Biden’s challenging debate performance against Trump on June 27.

In an early show of support for the 81-year-old president, donors contributed significantly to Biden right after the debate.

However, Biden’s faltering debate performance quickly raised concerns about his capability to serve another term, sparking increasing calls within his own party for the president to suspend his presidential campaign. The momentary fundraising boost did not sustain, and by early July, donations began to dwindle.

On the other hand, Trump’s July fundraising represented an increase of more than $25 million compared to the $112 million raised in June.

The Trump campaign also reported a cash reserve of $327 million by the end of July, stating that “these numbers reflect continued enthusiasm among donors at all levels and provide the resources needed for the crucial 96 days leading up to victory on November 5.”

Trump later made a social media statement pointing to his fundraising success, declaring, “Incredible support from Great American Patriots who are contributing to our Campaign for President of the United States.”

Earlier last week, the Harris campaign celebrated raising $81 million within 24 hours after Biden announced he was suspending his campaign.

This one-day fundraising total comfortably surpassed the almost $53 million Trump raised two months earlier in the first 24 hours following his conviction on 34 felony counts in New York City.

The Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee had an advantage in fundraising over Trump and the Republican National Committee earlier this year. However, during the second quarter of 2024 (April to June), Trump and the RNC outperformed Biden and the DNC, raising $331 million to their $264 million.

Fundraising, along with polling, is a critical measure in campaign politics—signifying a candidate’s popularity and the strength of their campaign. The funds raised can be utilized in various ways, such as hiring staff, enhancing grassroots outreach, executing get-out-the-vote initiatives, purchasing advertisements across TV, radio, digital, and mail, and covering travel expenses for candidates.
