Cricket legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott stated that his wife played a crucial role in saving his life after he was recently hospitalized with pneumonia.
The 83-year-old, famed for scoring over 8,000 Test runs for England and later for his distinguished commentary career, underwent surgery last month due to a second diagnosis of throat cancer.
After his surgery, he returned home only to fall ill with pneumonia.
Boycott exited the hospital once more on Thursday and expressed in a column for The Telegraph that he felt ‘fortunate to be alive.’
In his message of gratitude to fans and supporters, Boycott recounted the harrowing moment when he narrowly escaped death.
Sir Geoffrey Boycott has said that he feels lucky to be alive after a recent bout of pneumonia.
Boycott claimed that his life was saved by the actions of his wife Rachael, pictured (right) alongside him in the Royal Box on Wimbledon’s Centre Court in June 2013.
He wrote: ‘I owe my life to the quick response of my wife Rachael. She recognized that my recovery from throat cancer surgery had taken a turn for the worse.
‘I was at home recovering and felt alright initially, but then I became delirious overnight, unable to speak properly and I looked terrible.
‘We had a pulse oximeter at home that she used, and it showed my blood oxygen level at 35 percent.
‘That is when she understood there was a significant issue and called for an ambulance.
‘I was rushed back to the hospital, put on oxygen, and diagnosed with pneumonia. It has taken a toll on me, and without Rachael’s swift actions, I’m certain I would not have survived the night. She undoubtedly saved my life.’
Boycott’s family had made a statement on July 21, following his return to the hospital.
‘Thank you all for the overwhelming well wishes!’ his daughter, Emma, posted on her father’s X (formerly Twitter) account.
‘Sadly, there has been a deterioration in his condition; he has developed pneumonia and cannot eat or drink, so he is back in hospital on oxygen and a feeding tube for now.’
Former England and Yorkshire captain Boycott, 83, is an icon in the world of cricket punditry.
Boycott’s daughter Emma (right) previously sent fans an update on her father’s condition.
Boycott had disclosed just weeks earlier that his cancer had returned.
This was over two decades after his initial diagnosis back in 2003.
