On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris officially secured her party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential election, as the Democratic National Committee confirmed that she had garnered support from a majority of pledged delegates for the upcoming national convention.
“I am extremely proud to announce that Vice President Harris has received a majority of votes from all delegates and will be the Democratic Party’s nominee after voting concludes on Monday,” stated DNC chair Jaime Harrison.
During a call with supporters on Friday, Harris expressed, “I am deeply honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States.”
She further highlighted that “the relentless efforts of our delegates, state leaders, and staff have been crucial in achieving this moment.”

This announcement follows a virtual roll call initiated by the DNC on Thursday, which will continue through Monday.
Although there was never any doubt regarding Harris’s nomination, she was the sole candidate to get on the presidential nomination roll call. This marks a historic achievement as Harris becomes the first woman of color to head a major political party’s national ticket.
1 OF THESE 5 DEMOCRATS COULD BE HARRIS’ RUNNING MATE
While delegates are casting their votes remotely for the official nomination, the DNC will conduct a ceremonial roll call at the Democratic National Convention, set to begin on Aug. 19 in Chicago.
Harris’s nomination comes shortly after President Biden’s surprising announcement about halting his 2024 re-election campaign against former President Trump, the GOP’s nominee.

Biden’s unexpected announcement followed increasing pressure from within the Democratic Party for him to withdraw after a disappointing performance during last month’s initial presidential debate against Trump. The 81-year-old Biden’s faltering and hesitant delivery raised concerns about his capability to serve a further four years in the presidency.

However, Biden’s swift endorsement of Harris sparked a wave of support for the vice president from Democratic governors, senators, House representatives, and other party figures. Within 36 hours, Harris declared she had secured her party’s nomination by obtaining the verbal endorsement from a majority of nearly 4,000 convention delegates.
With Harris’s nomination now confirmed, speculation has surged over her choice of running mate in the week and a half since. The Harris campaign has revealed that both the vice president and her future running mate will embark on a tour through all seven critical battleground states, starting on Tuesday in Pennsylvania.
After the conclusion of the presidential nomination virtual roll call at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, DNC regulations will permit Harris to nominate her running mate.
The DNC indicates that the convention chair will subsequently declare that candidate the party’s vice presidential nominee.
