Anthony Ammirati may not return home from the Olympics with a medal, but he could still be considered a winner.
The 21-year-old French pole vaulter was competing for a place in the men’s pole vault final but fell short in qualifying.
On his third attempt Saturday, Ammirati attempted to clear a height of 5.70 meters, but had an unusual failed try.

Unfortunately for Ammirati, his male anatomy hit the bar twice as he passed over it, leading to a failed vault.
A replay revealed the specifics of the incident, leaving broadcasters a bit unsure of how to react.
Of course, social media quickly seized the moment, and Ammirati found himself the subject of various crude jokes.
“Oh, he brought that baguette to the games,” one user quipped in one of the more printable reactions.
“Well, you win some, you lose some,” commented another.

Due to the ongoing debates surrounding transgender athletes in women’s sports, a few of those jokes arose as well.
“I can see this happening to a male athlete. When it involves a ‘female’ athlete, it raises suspicions,” one user remarked.
An X user even noted Ammirati’s rise in Instagram followers, which surged from around 8,400 to over 9,000 in less than a minute. As of this publication, his followers had reached 32,000.

Ammirati achieved a best vault of 5.60 meters, finishing in 15th place. The men’s final is scheduled for Monday.
Ammirati previously won the U20 World Championships in Colombia two years ago.
