Ben Gay, a former NFL running back who had a stint with the Cleveland Browns, tragically passed away last month in a car accident in Colorado. He was just 44 years old.

According to Nirfino, Gay lost his life in the car crash on July 29. The Associated Press, along with the Akron Beacon-Journal and Houston Chronicle, confirmed the news of Gay’s death.

“Rest easy the original Spring legend… Ben Gay!! I haven’t seen him since high school but we attended middle/high school together,” one user shared on Facebook. “High school memory! Ben was a beast in the 90’s. He’s at the end…. he left them boys!”

Gay made a name for himself as a running back at Garden City Community College in Kansas after leaving the Baylor program due to team violations.

Before joining the Browns, he had a trial with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.

Throughout the 2001 season, he played in all 16 games for Cleveland, helping the team achieve a 7-9 record and a third-place finish in the AFC North division. He ran for 172 yards on 51 carries, including one touchdown.

Gay was released by Cleveland in the following offseason, later signing with the Indianapolis Colts but was unable to secure a spot on their 53-man roster, as reported by the Beacon-Journal.

He is survived by his wife and three children, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
