The conditions in which this might be effective include women who are overdue, have a Bishop score higher than six, and have previously given birth. (The Bishop score is a tool used by healthcare providers to evaluate the necessity of labor induction.)
Teen emphasized that castor oil not only has an “awful taste” but also acts as a “strong laxative.”

“If you are a first-time mom and you’re around 37, 38, or 39 weeks along without any contractions or dilation, drinking castor oil will just lead to excessive diarrhea,” Teen explained.
“However, if you are nearing labor, or your body is saying, ‘I just need a little nudge,’ and you’ve consulted your healthcare provider, and they give the green light for castor oil, then it may work for you,” she added.

‘Limited scientific evidence’
Dr. Meleen Chuang, an OB-GYN at NYU Langone, remarked that while castor oil is often suggested as a natural labor-inducing method, there is “limited scientific evidence backing its efficacy.”
She mentioned to Fox News Digital, “This is frequently utilized by midwives and might be safe to try once.”

“Castor oil functions by stimulating the need for a bowel movement, which might help if you are constipated.”
Chuang advised having a consultation with an OB-GYN before exploring any labor induction methods, as healthcare professionals can tailor guidance according to a woman’s unique circumstances and medical history.

She also suggested alternative holistic methods to facilitate labor, such as acupuncture, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques.
Taking a warm bath or shower, along with massage and aromatherapy, may also alleviate discomfort, according to Chuang.
