A video featuring Vice President Kamala Harris from 2017, where she urged “everyone” to remain “woke,” has resurfaced online, prompting critics and conservatives to attack the official Democratic nominee as a “Communist functionary” deemed “too radical” for the presidency.
“We need to stay woke. Everyone should be woke. You can argue about who is the wokest, but the goal is to be more woke than less woke,” then-Senator Harris stated during the 2017 Recode’s annual Code Conference, which featured philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
The conference addressed topics such as immigration and environmental issues, with Harris criticizing the Trump administration’s drug and immigration policies just moments before her “stay woke” appeal.
“I feel anger when we refuse entry to refugees fleeing from horrific situations, especially after they’ve waited two years to qualify for refugee status. It’s infuriating when they arrive here and we turn them away. Yes, I’m going to be upset about that. I’m going to be upset when an attorney general tries to revive the war on drugs, believing that marijuana is the greatest evil humanity has faced. … Leave grandma’s medical marijuana alone,” Harris expressed.

The following day, Harris reiterated her remarks in a post on X, stating, “We must remain active. We must stay woke.”
The term “woke” gained traction in 2017 when both Oxford and Merriam-Webster added it to their dictionaries, defining it as being mindful of social justice issues. It has since been adopted as a broad term for various left-leaning agendas.

Seven years after Harris’s appearance at the 2017 conference, critics on social media are attacking the presumptive Democratic nominee over the resurfaced clip, including conservative author James Lindsay, who labeled Harris a “Communist functionary.”
“Kamala is a low-level Communist functionary, and I’m exhausted from having to pretend she isn’t,” he commented.

Fox News Digital attempted to contact the Harris campaign regarding the clip and subsequent critique, but did not receive an immediate response.
This clip surfaced after President Biden exited the 2024 presidential race late last month, shortly followed by his endorsement of his vice president to lead the charge for the White House. Harris officially secured the 2024 Democratic nomination on Friday, garnering a majority of votes from convention delegates, according to the DNC.

With less than 100 days remaining until November 5, Harris is gearing up to engage voters as she prepares for her electoral face-off against former President Donald Trump. As she ramps up her campaign efforts, critics have begun to highlight various articles and video clips featuring Harris, including instances where she voiced support for the defund the police movement in 2020 and praised a pastor who attributed the 9/11 attacks to the U.S.
