A New Jersey father was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday for causing his son’s death by forcing him to run on a fast-moving treadmill as a form of punishment.
Christopher Gregor made his 6-year-old son, Corey Micciolo, use the treadmill on March 20, 2021, even after the boy fell repeatedly. Corey died on April 2.
At his sentencing, 32-year-old Gregor stated that he was unaware his son had suffered a serious medical problem following the ordeal, maintaining that the treadmill exercise wasn’t responsible for his death.
“I want to assure you that on April 2, I did nothing to cause Corey’s passing,” Gregor expressed in court, as reported by Law and Crime. “I didn’t hurt my son. I loved him and I still do. I regret not taking him to the hospital sooner. I didn’t realize how ill he was. I just thought he was simply tired.”

Prosecutors noted that Gregor elevated the treadmill’s speed while Corey was using it, leading to multiple falls.
About two weeks later, Micciolo exhibited symptoms of nausea, slurred speech, and unstable walking.
“Corey was and still is my life, my world and my everything. What this monster did was pathetic, disgusting, and I wish him nothing but the worst.”
Security footage captured Gregor taking Micciolo’s unconscious body to his car on April 2 to transport him to a local hospital in Hackensack, as per the New York Post.
Corey suffered a seizure during a CT scan and was later pronounced dead.

A nurse at Southern Ocean Medical Center indicated that, upon arrival, Micciolo was unable to speak, according to the report.
An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to his chest and abdomen.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer stated that Gregor is subjected to the “No Early Release Act,” meaning he must serve at least 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
Gregor was convicted of manslaughter and child endangerment in May, evading a murder charge that could have resulted in a life sentence.

Breanna Micciolo, the deceased boy’s mother, pleaded with Judge Guy Ryan to impose the harshest possible sentence on Gregor.
“Everything he did to Corey was motivated by spite toward me,” she alleged, claiming he showed no remorse for his actions. “Another reason I believe this is because he has a twisted mind and used Corey as his outlet… He displayed no love for Corey, and to him, Corey was merely a burden.”

Gregor’s defense argued that Corey’s death resulted from an infection and not from the injuries incurred during the treadmill incident; however, jurors dismissed this argument.
“Corey was and still is my life, my world and my everything,” his mother declared in court. “What this monster did was appalling, vile, and I wish him nothing but the worst.”
