Minna Stess made an important point: Skateboarding can be challenging to sustain over time.
While many experience it as a childhood phase, only a handful persist to make it a habit and a lifestyle. Even fewer turn it into a career.
At just 18 years old, Stess transitioned from skating in her neighborhood to competing for gold; she is set to compete in the women’s park event on Tuesday.

“It’s amazing. I never imagined I’d get the chance to do this. It’s exciting to have this opportunity. I worked hard for it, and I’m thrilled that my effort is recognized and that I can represent the U.S. … I’m just excited and ready for competition,” Stess shared in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.
When skateboarding was introduced at the Tokyo Olympics, Stess hadn’t even dreamed of pursuing a gold medal as a child.
“I used to watch gymnastics and think, ‘How cool would it be to represent Team USA?’ Now, I’m in that position,” she remarked.
While many know about Tony Hawk, Stess believes the Olympics elevate the status of skateboarding.

“There are mixed feelings among people about it; I personally find it really impressive,” she mentioned. “The Olympics are likely to draw more interest in skateboarding. It’s a challenging sport to maintain and continue. I’m happy to be here. This is a fantastic opportunity, and I never thought I’d face the Olympics when I was younger.”
“This is incredible, and it opens up numerous possibilities for skaters interested in the sport.”
While the United States did not win medals in the women’s street competition last week, American skaters Jagger Eaton and Nyjah Huston secured silver and bronze, respectively.
Despite the lack of medals on the women’s side, Stess expressed that she doesn’t feel additional pressure.

“Skateboarding is about 90% failure. I plan to skate, aim to achieve my goals, and hope it goes well,” she explained.
“My ultimate aim is simply to execute my run, accomplish what I set out to do, and if I succeed, I’ll be thrilled. Of course, I want to perform well, but it’s uncertain. You focus on your intentions, but you never know what score you will receive. It’s all or nothing, which is part of skating.”
