Simone Biles’ journey towards her fourth gold medal at the Paris Olympics came to an unexpected end on the balance beam on Monday, as a misstep denied her a spot on the podium.
Biles had a strong opportunity to secure gold, especially after several competitors before her stumbled and fell. The only obstacle left was Italy’s Alice D’Amato, who aimed to make history for her nation.

Unfortunately, Biles, who had previously earned bronze medals on this apparatus in the last two Olympics, slipped and fell from the beam. This mistake cost her the opportunity to stand on the podium. Her teammate, Suni Lee, also encountered difficulty, hitting the beam and subsequently falling to the mat before regrouping and completing her routine.
This marked the first instance since 2000 that the American team did not secure a podium position.
Rebeca Andrade of Brazil was another strong contender for the event, but she too did not make it to the podium.
