Andre Onana has conveyed to Manchester United supporters that he is prepared to take even greater risks while in goal this season.

One significant factor behind United’s decision to sign the Cameroon goalkeeper from Inter Milan last summer was his capacity for an expansive style of play, including passing from the back, coming off his line, and venturing outside his penalty area.

Things didn’t always progress smoothly initially; Onana was beaten from half the pitch during his home debut against Lens and was fortunate to escape a penalty during his inaugural Premier League game at Old Trafford against Wolves.

However, the 28-year-old found his footing after a rocky start, participating in all but one of United’s 54 matches as they concluded the season triumphantly by winning the FA Cup against Manchester City at Wembley.

As he approaches his second season at United, Onana exudes confidence, branding himself ‘the best goalkeeper in the world,’ while also alerting fans that he plans to take even more gambles this season.

‘Yes, that’s me,’ he chuckled. ‘I think it’s what everyone will see this season because I plan to take significant risks. I can tell you in advance! Prepare yourselves because it’s going to be like that this season, trust me! I am excited about the start of this season.

‘The best team in the world takes risks. Building from the back, reading situations when the opponent goes one-on-one, or presses with three or four players.

‘It’s integral for me to recognize those scenarios and make the best decisions for the team. I will embrace the responsibility, and I believe my back is robust enough to handle it, right? I think it’s going to be a delightful season.’

Onana acknowledges that he has adapted to criticism following his shaky beginning at United and admits that expectations should be high at such a prestigious club.

‘Yes, I think six months ago I truly felt at home,’ he continued. ‘Settling into a new country, new league, and new faces isn’t always straightforward, but my teammates have provided immense support, and I’m thankful for that.

‘At first, it was a bit strange for me since I wasn’t accustomed to the country and its setup, but now I feel comfortable. It’s a wonderful environment, and my teammates, staff, and fans have made my transition seamless, so I’m glad to be here.

‘As a player for Manchester United, receiving criticism when you don’t win is fair, because, ultimately, it’s part of the job.

‘We are here for that, and being regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world naturally means I will experience some pressure to meet high expectations from the fans and the club.

‘But at the same time, they provide me with a lot of support. It’s about finding balance, and sometimes criticism is beneficial because it encourages reflection on what could have been better, so I choose to take a positive perspective on it.’

Even though United’s victory against City in the Cup Final secured Erik ten Hag’s position, the club ended the Premier League in eighth place, and Onana recognizes the need for higher aspirations.

‘As the top club in the country, expectations are always significant,’ he stated. ‘The goal is to win everything, compete fiercely in every single match, and maintain consistency. Our past performances have shown we can defeat any opponent, so we will strive to win everything.

‘It’s vital for us. We understand what we represent—a prestigious badge. Playing for Manchester United is challenging because the expectations are perpetually elevated.

‘I feel last season’s results were insufficient, considering I have played in a Champions League final and, while the FA Cup is significant, it isn’t enough for Manchester United.

‘Our targets this season must be exceptionally high, and we’ll pursue them tenaciously. We are working diligently and positively, and I am enthusiastic about our new signings. The dedication my teammates demonstrate daily fills me with optimism.’

Onana is also adjusting to a new goalkeeping coach, as United has replaced Richard Hartis with Jelle ten Rouwelaar, who has come from Ajax to emphasize playing out from the back even further.

‘To be honest, it’s going very well,’ Onana remarked. ‘I also had a fantastic relationship with Richard, who was a great guy and provided immense support, especially when I faced challenges upon arrival. I’m grateful for all he did for me, and I believe all the goalkeepers were satisfied with him.

‘Now the club has decided to move on and bring in someone new, and we are collaborating well and are pleased to work with Jelle.

‘He has his unique approach, and it’s enjoyable; we are having fun, and the critical factor is for the team to win. So we are prepared to take on anyone.’
