Cyriel Dessers asserts that he “does not need to respond” to critics after scoring what may turn out to be a vital equaliser in Rangers’ quest for Champions League success.
Despite achieving an impressive tally of 22 goals in his first season at Ibrox, the Nigerian striker has faced significant scrutiny during his time in Scotland.
This trend has continued into the current season, particularly after the 29-year-old squandered opportunities in Saturday’s goalless match against Hearts and in Tuesday’s first leg against Dynamo Kiev.
However, Dessers maintained his composure to score a crucial equaliser in the 94th minute in Lublin and commented on the thrilling conclusion, stating that “more recognition would be appreciated”.
“As a striker, you must have faith,” he told BBC Scotland. “Even if the ball seems impossible to reach or you doubt it will come your way.”
“I realised it was the final ball into the box of the match, and indeed it was. I was glad to be there to finish it.”
“I don’t feel the need to justify myself to anyone; I’m simply doing my part for the team, the manager, and myself. That’s what truly counts.”
“While it would be nice to receive more recognition for your efforts, I appreciate the acknowledgment I receive within the club, and that’s what matters most.”
Dessers acknowledges that “media reactions” and a “minority” of the fanbase exist, yet he feels a significant amount of “support and affection” from a “larger segment” of the fans.
There have been suggestions for Philippe Clement to consider alternatives to the Nigerian if he hopes to lead the Ibrox side to a Scottish Premiership title.
Nevertheless, Dessers’ last-minute goal may provide his manager with essential resources to enhance the squad should they progress to the Champions League.
“Cyriel kept pushing for the goal,” Clement stated in an interview with BBC Scotland.
“He had several opportunities that he struck well, but the goalkeeper denied him. He didn’t stop believing, and I’m thrilled for him that he found the net.”
“If you look at his performance compared to seven months ago, he is contributing significantly more to the team. He is continuously improving, and that’s what we desire.”
“People may have formed a specific opinion about him, but I know that defenders find it challenging to compete against him.”
