Kent Butcher, a former footy star with Collingwood and a beloved figure in Geelong, is bravely battling back after sustaining a serious spinal injury that nearly took his life and resulted in paralysis.
At 50 years old, he experienced a medical crisis on July 29, which led to fractured vertebrae in his neck and severe damage to his spinal cord.
This injury has resulted in restricted movement following urgent cervical spinal surgery.
Currently, he is in a specialized rehabilitation hospital in Melbourne, where he is working hard to regain his strength.
His rehabilitation entails relearning how to walk and use his hands, a process that will keep him in the hospital for several months.
A fundraising page has been set up by a friend to assist with Butcher’s medical costs and to support his family during this challenging time.
Kellie Loving, the spokesperson for the campaign, stated, ‘He is gradually recovering some movement and strength post-surgery but has a long way to go while being treated in Melbourne.’
‘With his determination and passion for sports, we are confident he can overcome these challenges.’
Kent Butcher played for Collingwood in the AFL and is now facing extensive rehab after a medical episode left him paralysed.
Butcher is a local icon in Geelong and played in the juniors and seniors for a local club.
Butcher’s footy journey began in Geelong with the under-19s and reserves, eventually leading to his AFL debut with Collingwood in 1993.
Throughout his career, he played 22 games, mainly as a defender. He was recognized as a Rising Star nominee in 1994 for his notable performance against St Kilda.
Unfortunately, his career was hindered by injuries, culminating in his delisting in 1995.
He had a brief stint with Sydney but did not feature in any senior matches for the Swans. After his AFL career, Butcher returned to Geelong, where he thrived in local footy as both a player and a coach.

Butcher and his wife are also anticipating the joyous arrival of their first grandchild.
