As a former Republican representative who served alongside Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, I can confidently say he is a down-to-earth individual. In these divisive times, America needs someone capable of serving the nation with humility and calmness, free from the shouting and bravado that frequently characterize our political landscape.

Despite representing different political parties—Tim as a Democrat and myself as a Republican—we consistently found common ground and collaborated on various issues to benefit our constituents and the country. America needs a relatable leader now more than ever, and I am thrilled that Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Tim as her running mate.

During our time in Congress, Tim and I connected through our shared military experiences and developed a mutual respect that crossed party lines. Having both served in the U.S. Army, we recognized that while we might not see eye to eye on every policy topic, our love for our country and commitment to defend it was fundamental. To us, military service knows no party; it is purely American service.

Before his role as Minnesota governor, Tim made significant contributions as a congressman, advocating for issues that resonate with a diverse array of Americans. I witnessed his leadership on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, where he tirelessly fought for veterans’ rights, pushed for education reforms, and tackled health care disparities.

Interestingly, and disappointingly rare in today’s political climate, Tim didn’t pursue initiatives to elevate his partisan agenda or enhance his social media presence. His genuine commitment to policies aimed at improving lives for everyone stood out.

During my deployment to Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Infantry Division, Tim was still in Congress. He made the effort to visit my forward operating base in Kandahar. His motivation was clear: Tim wasn’t seeking accolades or photo opportunities for personal gain. Drawing from his experience as a former Army Sergeant Major, he understood the importance of supporting our troops rather than seeking self-promotion. His visit to Afghanistan aimed at ensuring that soldiers had what we required to complete our mission effectively. That is precisely the leadership America needs today.

Recently, Tim and I reconnected at the observances celebrating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day in June. As veterans, we both understood the sacrifices made by those brave Americans during WWII as they fought against extremist fascism. Our reunion highlighted that, beyond party affiliations, we are both devoted Americans, loving husbands, proud fathers, and Army veterans. These shared traits matter more to me and to America than any partisan labels.

Tim’s capacity to listen and collaborate to find practical solutions has earned him respect not only from Democrats but also from Republicans like myself. Even in times of disagreement, I remember Tim’s friendly demeanor, warm handshake, and approachable nature that put everyone at ease, regardless of their political background. He recognizes that America’s strength stems from our ability to unite as fellow citizens instead of engaging in petty arguments.

America already has an abundance of attention-seeking politicians who rely on grandstanding, self-promotion, and toxic partisanship fueled by endless social media interactions. What we truly need is a kind and gracious individual who communicates like a considerate neighbor, intimately knows the community like a local high school coach, understands the dedication of military service as a fellow veteran, and champions policies for all Americans—irrespective of party affiliation.

This is precisely who my friend Tim Walz is.
