Newcastle is cautiously optimistic that Marc Guéhi will be a vital part of their squad when the season kicks off. Talks with Crystal Palace regarding the England defender’s anticipated £60m-plus transfer are reportedly progressing positively, and notably, Guéhi has expressed a strong desire to move to St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old is scheduled to rejoin Palace’s first-team squad for pre-season training on Wednesday following his efforts with England at the European Championship in Germany, but he may soon redirect towards Newcastle.

While an agreement with Palace is yet to be finalized, and until final details are confirmed the negotiation remains vulnerable to disruption, Newcastle is on the verge of making a significant signing.

Guéhi stood out as one of England’s top performers at Euro 24 and is seen as a perfect long-term defensive partner for Sven Botman by Newcastle. With Botman recuperating from an anterior cruciate ligament surgery, bringing in a central defender has become a priority for Newcastle, and they hope to wrap up a deal for Guéhi this weekend.

Although Palace dismissed Newcastle’s initial bid last week, they appear open to selling a player who has two years left on his contract and an evident desire to depart.

Landing Guéhi, who has drawn interest from several clubs including Liverpool, would be a significant achievement for Paul Mitchell, Newcastle’s new sporting director. It would also demonstrate to Eddie Howe the club’s ambition, especially as he is a notable candidate on the Football Association’s list to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.

West Ham has secured the signing of Argentine defensive midfielder Guido Rodríguez on a free transfer following his exit from Real Betis. He was part of the Argentina teams that claimed victory in the 2022 World Cup as well as the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments, and West Ham’s technical director, Tim Steidten, hailed his arrival as “a big statement of intent.”

Norwich has acquired the Manchester City defender Callum Doyle on a season-long loan. He previously had loan spells with Sunderland, Coventry, and Leicester.
