In the past, the automatic selection process was based on two distinct lists: one comprised results from the DP World Tour, while the other reflected the accumulation of world ranking points during the qualification timeframe.
Guy Kinnings, the chief executive of the European Tour, referred to the adjustments as a “significant milestone.”
“This new qualification system is undoubtedly more streamlined and straightforward than those used in previous years,” he stated.
“We also appreciate the invaluable contributions made by Luke and his vice-captains, Edoardo Molinari and Thomas Bjorn, over the past few months.”
The qualifying period is set to commence at the British Masters, which begins at the Belfry on August 29. Points will only be achievable at DP World Tour events until the end of 2024.
This initiative aims to encourage the continent’s top players to participate in local tournaments.
Starting in the new year, American tournaments will begin to factor into European qualification. The prestigious “Signature Events,” alongside The Players Championship and the FedEx Cup playoffs, will each offer 3,000 points.
The four major championships hold more weight – the Masters, US PGA, US Open, and The Open each grant 5,000 qualifying points, whereas the elite Rolex Series tournaments on the DP World Tour are valued at 2,000 points, matching the standard PGA Tour events.
“I am thrilled to announce the specifics of the qualification process for our 2025 Ryder Cup team,” remarked Donald, who still has six captain’s wildcards available for the title defense against Keegan Bradley’s US team at Bethpage Black.
“A tremendous amount of effort has gone into reaching this milestone, and our focus is now centered on retaining the trophy in New York next September.”
The qualifying period will extend until Sunday, August 24, 2025. The final tournament for that date is yet to be determined.
