Authorities confirmed to Fox News Digital that a woman accused of discarding her newborn in a dumpster in Houston is in the U.S. illegally.
On July 26, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials stated that ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston filed an immigration detainer against Everilda Cux Ajtalam, 18, at the Harris County Jail.
ICE verified that she is a Guatemalan national who unlawfully entered the U.S. as an unaccompanied minor, subsequent to her arrest for reportedly abandoning her child with no intention of return.
Prosecutors reported that Ajtalam gave birth in a parking lot, placed the infant in a tied trash bag, and left it in a dumpster. This incident was captured on surveillance video, as reported by KPRC.

Officers from the Houston Police Department were notified about the abandoned baby around 1:15 p.m. on Friday, July 26, after residents reported hearing cries coming from the dumpster area, as KRIV reported.
According to a police affidavit obtained by KPRC, Ajtalam claimed she gave birth that day outside the food truck where she is employed.
She further stated that she placed the “child, placenta, and umbilical cord into a trash bag, brought the bag to a dumpster, and left the child inside the tied bag in the dumpster,” as per the affidavit.

During her initial court appearance on Friday, Harris County District Court Judge Veronica M. Nelson reprimanded Ajtalam for abandoning her child among trash, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
“It was solely due to luck that the child was discovered and received medical attention,” Nelson reportedly stated. “Considering it’s mid-summer in Houston, Texas, with dangerous temperatures; under these conditions, I will set bail for this case at $90,000.”
Judge Nelson subsequently increased her bond to $200,000.
