Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance is reiterating his call for the media to hold Kamala Harris accountable by prompting her to address inquiries regarding her record, arguing that reporters have afforded her a “honeymoon” period free from scrutiny.

At a press conference on Wednesday in Detroit, Michigan, Vance urged the media to “exhibit some self-awareness” and encourage Harris to “fulfill her duties as a presidential candidate” by engaging with journalists.

“Until she does, you all need to stop granting her a honeymoon and acting as if she is something she is not,” he stated.

Vance further criticized Harris’ previous remarks regarding law enforcement and her involvement in addressing migration issues at the southern border.

“The media’s favoritism towards someone who evades the American public is appalling. This isn’t just a disservice to Kamala Harris; it’s increasingly shameful for the media as well,” he remarked.

Vance had previously criticized the media’s approach to covering Harris while addressing a press gaggle on his flight ahead of a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday. The Ohio senator responded to a question about former President Trump not campaigning until Friday, noting that he and Trump adopt a “divide and conquer” strategy.

However, he quickly shifted his focus to Harris, who has not participated in a formal interview or press conference in over two weeks since she was named the Democratic nominee.

“I believe you all must improve at compelling Kamala Harris to respond to questions,” he asserted. “This individual has been the presumptive Democratic nominee for 16 days without tackling a single genuine question from a journalist. The American populace has the right to understand those who wish to lead them, and it’s disgraceful for both Kamala Harris and, increasingly, for the media that she is employing a basement strategy to evade reporters instead of confronting them and addressing challenging questions regarding her record, thereby allowing the American people to learn about her.”

Vance expressed that he and Trump tackle both “hostile and non-hostile questions” as a sign of respect for the American public.

Other than a few informal interactions with reporters since she secured the 2024 nomination, Harris has largely avoided the press while enjoying largely favorable media coverage during that time.
