Renowned South African actress and “Black Panther” star Connie Chiume has passed away, as confirmed by Fox News Digital.
She passed away at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg after experiencing “a period of illness,” according to a statement from her family. She was 72 years old.
Her son, Nongelo Chiume, shared with Newzroom Afrika that his mother was initially hospitalized for a “medical procedure” and had been “doing well” in her recovery before her death.

“She has left behind a beautiful legacy, and her contributions were impactful not only for her family but also for the community and the nation as a whole,” her son expressed. “[She] was among the most prominent icons from South Africa. Her activism on HIV and AIDS education, gender-based violence, and voter education in 1994 continues to inspire many.”

“The Chiume family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for all the messages of support and condolences during this challenging time as they navigate the loss of their mother, Connie,” the family stated.
“Her children are also grateful to the doctors and nursing staff for their outstanding care throughout her hospital stay,” the statement continued.

The family will provide details regarding a memorial and funeral service on her social media as arrangements are made.
Chiume gained recognition for her performance as Zawavari in the 2018 Marvel film “Black Panther.” She also featured in its sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which was released in 2022. She was preceded in death by the film’s lead actor, Chadwick Boseman, who succumbed to colon cancer in August 2020.
