McKenna has achieved an incredible feat at Ipswich Town, guiding the team from League One to the Premier League within just two and a half years of his tenure.
His dynamic style of play led to consecutive second-place finishes, totaling 101 goals in League One and 92 in the Championship.
It’s no wonder that the 38-year-old Northern Irishman is viewed as one of the most promising managerial talents in the industry.
He had initially intended to depart the club this summer, with rumors linking him to Brighton, Manchester United—where he previously served as assistant manager—and Chelsea. Nonetheless, he opted to sign a four-year contract with the Tractor Boys. Earlier this year, he was also a candidate for the Crystal Palace managerial position.
This new agreement positions him among the highest-paid managers in the Premier League, as stated by BBC reporter Nick Mashiter.
Notably, Ipswich’s ascent was achieved with a relatively modest expenditure of £4m last summer to enhance their League One squad for Championship competition.
He has received commendation for his meticulous approach and his readiness to share his strategic insights.
“He represents a different breed of manager compared to those I was familiar with, who often held total control over the club,” remarked former Ipswich captain Mick Mills on BBC Radio Suffolk.
“It quickly became clear that his strength lies in his work on the training ground, which is where he truly thrives.”
Leif Davis recorded 18 assists last season playing as a left wing-back, while Conor Chaplin netted 42 goals in the past two years.
“He’s an extraordinary manager; his attention to detail is unmatched,” stated Wales striker Kieffer Moore, who had a loan spell at Ipswich in the latter half of last season.
