President Biden is set to urge Congress to implement term limits and establish a code of conduct for the Supreme Court. Additionally, he plans to propose restrictions on presidential immunity, according to a White House official.
The President will unveil his proposed changes in a speech on Monday at the LBJ Presidential Library, marking the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. He also expressed his thoughts on Supreme Court reform in an op-ed released Monday morning.
“Having served as a U.S. senator for 36 years, including roles as chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, I have had the experience of overseeing more Supreme Court nominations than anyone else currently living,” Biden stated in the op-ed published in the Washington Post. “I hold our institutions and the separation of powers in high regard. However, the current situation is unprecedented and is eroding public trust in the court’s decisions—especially those affecting personal freedoms. We are at a critical juncture,” Biden added.
