Arsenal has acquired Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for a fee that could reach £42m with add-ons included.
The 22-year-old, who participated in all three of Italy’s group matches at Euro 2024, has committed to a five-year contract with Mikel Arteta’s team.
He has promptly linked up with his new teammates in Philadelphia.
“I’m truly delighted to be here,” Calafiori stated. “I’ve been waiting for this.”
“I aspire for us to achieve something wonderful this season.”
Calafiori, who spent one season at Bologna, is capable of playing both as a central defender and left-back, and has even operated as a left winger in the past.
Last season, he featured in 30 Serie A matches for Bologna, netting two goals and contributing five assists as they secured a fifth-place finish to clinch a Champions League spot.
Arteta praised Calafiori as a “fantastic signing.”
“Riccardo possesses a big personality and character, along with unique skills that will enhance our team as we strive for major titles,” he noted.
“He has demonstrated remarkable development in recent seasons, evidenced by his performances for both Bologna and Italy, and his growth over the past year has been incredibly impressive.
“We are eager to work with Riccardo, incorporate him into the squad, and support him in the years ahead.”
