President Biden referred to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s statement as “dead on arrival” during an unusual exchange with a reporter on Monday.

This incident occurred shortly after Biden urged Congress to implement term limits and a code of conduct for the Supreme Court. Earlier on the same day, Johnson criticized Biden’s plan to “radically overhaul the U.S. Supreme Court,” claiming it would “distort the balance of power” and undermine the rule of law.

“This proposal represents the culmination of ongoing efforts by the Biden-Harris Administration and Congressional Democrats to undermine the Supreme Court’s legitimacy,” asserted the Louisiana Republican. “Their advocacy for expanding and restructuring the Court will likely recommence soon.”

“It’s significant that Democrats want to alter a system that has been foundational to our nation since its inception simply because they disagree with specific recent rulings from the Court,” he continued. “This reckless maneuver from the Biden-Harris Administration is dead on arrival in the House.”

Upon arriving in Austin, Texas, on Monday afternoon, Biden responded to a reporter’s question with a somewhat jumbled response.

“Mr. President, House Speaker Johnson stated your Supreme Court reform is ‘dead on arrival.’ What do you have to say?” the reporter asked.

“Who claimed that?” Biden asked in reply.

“Speaker Johnson mentioned it’s ‘dead on arrival,’” the reporter reiterated.

The president then retorted, “I believe that’s him.”

When the reporter sought further clarification, Biden reiterated his comment.

“That he is – dead on arrival,” he stated.

The president then committed to “find a way” to advance his proposed significant changes to the Supreme Court.

About an hour later, during a speech, Biden elaborated on his prior comments, indicating he was critiquing Johnson’s mindset.

“The Republican Speaker of the House claimed that whatever he suggests is dead on arrival,” Biden told the audience. “I believe his perspective is dead on arrival.”
