Pat McAfee has voiced his criticism regarding the Paris Olympics’ contentious opening ceremony.

The ESPN presenter called on the organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Games to prevent any potential uproar similar to what transpired during this summer’s Olympics.

Former President Donald Trump has also denounced last week’s ‘shameful’ opening ceremony, which received significant backlash due to contentious religious imagery presented at the extravagant event.

Organizers have issued an apology to those upset by a portrayal reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’, depicting the moment when Jesus Christ foretold one of his disciples’ betrayal.

During Friday’s ceremony, DJ and producer Barbara Butch — celebrated as an LGBTQ+ icon — was surrounded by drag artists and dancers, one of whom was reportedly exposed during the performance.

Religious conservatives globally have criticized the segment, and now McAfee has added his voice to the disapproval directed at Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the opening ceremony.

‘Many are stating that what Thomas Jolly orchestrated was highly disrespectful… for justifiable reasons,’ McAfee remarked.

‘I can’t comprehend how any of these elements pertain to the beginning of the Olympics or the announcement of its occurrence.’

He went on: ‘We want the focus to be on sports and not let the opening ceremony become a deterrent for viewers who wish to celebrate the athletes who dedicate their lives to excellence, with such opportunities only coming every four years.’

McAfee lamented the ‘self-inflicted’ turmoil surrounding the opening of the Games, urging the organizers of the upcoming 2028 Olympics to keep the focus on sports.

‘I hope that next time, we consider that… we can’t allow unrelated matters to prevent viewers from tuning in. The experience is magical!’ he exclaimed.

‘Many people are declaring they won’t watch the Olympics because of the opening ceremony. In my research about Thomas Jolly… the one aspect I did not find is any indication that he has passion for sports,’ McAfee continued.

‘That’s crucial – we need individuals who cherish sports involved in sporting events.’
