• Leny Yoro joined Manchester United from Lille for £59 million earlier this month
  • The young defender had to leave the pre-season friendly against Arsenal last weekend due to injury
  • There are concerns that the 18-year-old French player may have a fractured metatarsal

Leny Yoro, Manchester United’s recent £59 million purchase, is looking at a possibly extended period on the sidelines amid worries he might have sustained a metatarsal injury.

The injury occurred only two games into his career with United after he exited last weekend’s pre-season friendly against Arsenal in Los Angeles.

The 18-year-old French talent, who transferred to Old Trafford from Lille two weeks ago, was seen utilizing crutches with his left foot in a protective boot at United’s training facility on Wednesday.

Concerns surround the possibility of Yoro being sidelined for approximately two months, potentially missing the beginning of the season if his metatarsal is indeed fractured.

United will clash with Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 10 before beginning their Premier League journey against Fulham at home six days later.

United is anticipated to provide an update on Yoro’s condition on Thursday; however, the image of the centre-back struggling onto the team coach at the University of California campus in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon did not inspire confidence. Yoro sustained the injury shortly after the half-hour mark during the game against Arsenal and departed immediately after receiving treatment.

With Lisandro Martinez yet to return to training due to his participation in the Copa America, manager Erik ten Hag may need to select from Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelof for the central defense.

Meanwhile, United are actively seeking another centre-back ahead of the season, having held discussions with Bayern Munich regarding Matthijs de Ligt and saw a £50 million offer for Jarrad Branthwaite declined by Everton.

In addition to Yoro’s troubles, there may be further bad news for United, as Rasmus Hojlund also exited the Arsenal match during the first half with an apparent hamstring issue. Nevertheless, Hojlund appeared to move relatively well post-match, leading hopes that his injury is not severe.

These injuries echo United’s struggles during their tour in the United States last summer, where players like Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo faced injuries that sidelined them until November and December, respectively.

Diallo sustained knee ligament damage in the opening tour match against Arsenal in New Jersey, requiring surgery, while Mainoo injured his foot during the defeat to Real Madrid in Houston and was out for an additional four months.
